Levothroid

Levothyroxine is used as a replacement for a hormone that the thyroid gland produces to control metabolism and the body's energy. The drug is recommended to be taken when the thyroid cannot produce enough of the hormone by itself.

Levothyroxine is prescribed for curing hypothyroidism, for preventing and treating goiter, which may be the result of hormone imbalances, cancer, radiation treatment, and surgery.
The drug is no use in treating weight problems and obesity.

The medicine is used in other cases provided that it is recommended by the doctor.

The medication is inappropriate for you if you are recovering from a heart attack, or if you have an adrenal gland problem or thyrotoxicosis.

You should inform your doctor if you have anemia, coronary artery disease, diabetes, a heart disease, problems with adrenal glands or pituitary, or if you have ever had blood clots.
People taking insulin or diabetes medicine should check with the doctor about the dose as it may require some changes before you start taking levothyroxine. If you get a new prescription and you receive pills that look different from the previous ones, consult the pharmacist or doctor.

Take the drug for the entire time prescribed. Even if you start to feel better, you might still need to use Levothyroxine for the rest of your life for the replacement of the thyroid hormone that your body is not able to produce any more.

Inform the doctor about all the medications you take, including herbal products, vitamins, minerals, and medicines that were prescribed by other doctors. Never start a new drug if it wasn’t determined by the doctor.
