Mevacor is a drug generally recommended for decreasing high cholesterol. You should stick to a certain diet while taking this drug. It is useful for decreasing the risk of heart attack and chest pain because of angina. Mevacor is characterized as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, known as a "statin." By its activity in the body the medication decreases the production of fatty substances, including cholesterol.

You cannot take Mevacor if you have allergic reaction to an ingredient in the drug or if you are using an HIV protease inhibitor, ketoconazole, mibefradil, itraconazole, a macrolide antibiotic (like clarithromycin, erythromycin), nefazodone and telithromycin. Pregnant and breast-feeding women, people with abnormal liver function tests or liver disorders should not be treated with the given drug.
