Avodart is usually recommended for managing benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate gland enlargement. The medication decreases the risk of urinary block and prostate surgery. This drug can be taken in combination with other medications like tamsulosin.
Avodart is in a group of 5 alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitors. Its effect is aimed at reducing levels of a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone, which is the reason for enlarged prostate. Lowering dihydrotestosterone makes an enlarged prostate gland to shrink.
Avodart is not allowed for patients with allergic reaction to its ingredients or to other 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride. Women and children cannot take this drug.
